Grade 4/5 Fur Trade
Guthrie School and Alberta Centre for Trapping and Bushcraft- Partner up for Sustainability and Connecting students to the land Project.
This program brings an Alberta Trapper into the school with a kit that contains all the tanned hides of fur bearing animals native to Alberta. Including cleaned skulls and other items to discuss the historical fur trade and today’s Canadian Fur Trade. We talk about the life of a modern-day trapper and how trapping fits into conservation. We then discuss the Canadian Fur Trade and have some fun with how trade works.

We have been running this program since 2007 and have been able to speak to over 25 000 students. It is an extremely popular program. We have secured the funding to offer this program to the schools, so that for this year, we can do this free of charge.

The presentation takes approximately 60-90 minutes with questions and handling of the fur but can be adapted to fit in the time frame allotted. This is a great opportunity for the students to meet a real trapper and learn about the role that fur management plays in creating a healthy ecosystem.
